The Judy Roberts Band

Judy Roberts is a wonderful pianist and singer who today is bop-oriented and performs often in Phoenix and Chicago. The daughter of a swing era guitarist-arranger, Judy Roberts started playing piano when she was two. She became a vocalist while a senior in high school, recorded with Ray Brown when she was still a teenager, and played regularly in Chicago area clubs in the 1970s.

1979’s The Judy Roberts Band, the first of her three recordings for Inner City, was her debut recording as a leader. Ms. Roberts is heard on vocals, electric piano, clavinet, Omni and occasional acoustic piano, along with guitarist Neal Seroka, bassist Sean Silverman, drummer Phil Gratteau, and Tony Carpenter on congas and percussion. Together they perform four group originals (two by Roberts), a couple of pop tunes, and Charles Mingus' “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.” The music is funky, infectious and full of spirit. Judy Roberts displays a wide vocal range, swings on the electric piano as if it was an acoustic, and sounds quite joyful when she sings. This is difficult music to resist.

The Judy Roberts BandReview by Simon Sez
Judy Roberts is today a brilliant pianist and singer who can scat fast, play practically any song ever written, and has such a powerful left hand that she does not need bass or drums. She is also witty and quite a character. I suspect that all of the above was also true in the 1970s when she made three albums for Inner City.

The Judy Roberts Band was her first recording. Heard with a quintet, she plays and sings some of her own and her band’s material along with “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” and “You Light Up My Life.” What is different from now is that she is heard on electric piano much of the time. But have no fear, her winning personality and musicianship shine through.

Simon Sez: Judy Roberts’ first recording, The Judy Roberts Band (IC1078) from 1979 has her playing electric piano and singing very well. (Posted on 5/6/2014)
