- The Boy's A Joy!Review by Big Toots
Vocalist and uke-strummer, Peter’s Dean’s niece, Carly Simon’s (who appeared on Dean’s later effort for Inner City Jazz, “Radio”) biggest pop hit was “You’re So Vain.” While she might have hit it big with that song, she could have written another about her Uncle Peter, his “Snake Hips” dancing, and this wonderful effort and could have titled it: “Boy, You’re a Joy.” And, she’d be spot on.
With “Only Time Will Tell,” Dean dives into the songbook of some great big bands such as Jimmie Lunceford (“Rhythm is Our Business”), Chick Webb (“True Blue Lou”) and McKinney’s Cotton Pickers (“I Want a Little Girl”)and pulls out treasure from the dusty leadsheets. And, he does it with a laid-back coolness that LL Cool J and all those who “borrow” the name would envy. Dean brilliantly covers a dozen marvelous selections from back in the day “(Slow Boat to China,” “As Long as I Live”). However, no voh-dee-oh-doh megaphoner, he brings a thoroughly youthful flair and modernity to the session.
Wisely, and very much unlike crooners Tiny Tim (or “Our Gang’s” Alfalfa), Dean salutes this material, avoids any corny or cartoonish delivery and self-mockery. He is a hoot! Where else can you hear – and enjoy - selections with lyrics that include such words as “pantyhose,” “long underwear” and titles “Red Riding Hood” and still take things respectfully?
The presentation of easy swing, Dean’s voice and uke, combined with a gaggle of A-1 musicians and vocalists (including piano marvel, Dick Hyman, bassist Bob Haggart, woodwind star, Ron Odrich and studio drum star, Ronnie Traxler and vocalists, Lucy Simon (Carly’s sis) and Jean Churchill) make “Only Time Will Tell” a great time to be had.
“Only Time Will Tell” is an infectious celebration. So, don’t head to the Infirmary; go directly to the Dean’s office – ASAP.

- Peter DeanReview by Simon Sez
Only Time Will Tell, his first album, shows that Dean had a pretty good voice, was a fine songwriter (three of his songs are on the record) and his singing was full of joy. With Dick Hyman helping him out (and probably hiring some of the fine musicians), Peter Dean sings such songs as “As Long As I Live” and “Slow Boat To China” with a smile in his voice. You will be smiling too when you hear his versions.
Simon Sez: Late in life, Peter Dean decided to become a singer. Only Time Will Tell (CJ34) shows that he was pretty good and loved performing.
